The great driving force behind the popularity and rise of the Punjabi entertainment industry is the Omjee Group. The group is based out of Jalandhar, led by Munish Sahni – Owner and Managing Director at present.
Their journey to vogue began in 2008 as ‘Omjee Cine World’, at a time when there were only a handful of movies that would be released in one year. Omjee Group is acclaimed as one of the substantial production houses as well as distributors of Pollywood movies in the country. In words of Munish, “Cut to 2019, the industry boomed to over 50 film releases annually.”
The company is renowned for taking distributorship of movies such as ‘Angrej’ that proved to be a landmark in the industry. It also produced ‘Harjeeta’, a movie that gripped the viewers and grabbed an award in 2019 at the National Film Awards.
Munish took over the company from his late father, Shri Om Prakash Sahni, and as a mark of tribute to him, renamed the company as ‘Omjee Group’. Setting ahead a great example, he has been leading the company, his focus being connecting to the audiences through notable work.
“I think what really drives any film market is content. We have ensured that we give good content to our audiences. One of the elements for good content is the association film producers share with credible people in the industry. Right from Amrinder Gill, with whom we collaborate for our films, to Gippy Grewal, Tarsem Jassar, Parmish Verma putting their weight behind our projects, we have sought associations that will elevate the level of Punjabi films.”
Omjee Group is accredited for producing and distributing the highest-grossing Punjabi movies. This list includes ‘Mr. & Mrs.420’, ‘Lahoriye’, ‘Nikka Zaildar’, ‘Bambukat’, ‘Chal Mera Putt’, ‘Ardaas’, and ‘Ardas Kaaran’. The group has pioneered at taking Punjabi movies to non-Punjabi speaking audiences.
“Like I said, if you are making good content, you have the confidence that audiences will watch it irrespective of language. Who could have imagined that a Punjabi film, Sajjan Singh Rangroot will release in Russia? But we did that too”, said Munish.
Talking about upcoming projects, Munish added that the company is lined up with 40 movies to be released this year. We wish them all the best!
