In what can arguably be termed as one of the best finals of all-time, Argentina enjoyed a two-goal lead till the 80th minute courtesy of Lionel Messi converting a spot-kick in the 23rd minute and Angel Di Maria’s brilliant strike in the 36th minute.
However, a quick-fire brace from Kylian Mbappe brought the defending champions back in the game to take it to extra-time. Messi scored his second of the night to restore Argentina’s lead, but his Paris Saint-Germain teammate went on to complete his hat-trick to bring Didier Deschamps’ side level again; and becoming the first player since 1966 to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final.
In the penalty shootout, Lionel Messi along with Paula Dybala, Leandro Parades, and Gonzalo Montiel scored from the spot to secure the ultimate prize in #Qatar2022. While Mbappe & Randal Kolo Muani got scored, Kingsley Coman had his shot saved and Aurelien Tchouameni fired wide; thus handing the coveted trophy to the South American giants.
